What’s Closer to the Land?

Ashburnham Place has been running an outdoor educational project called ‘Closer to the Land’ since October 2023.

To date we have welcomed over 1200 young people and 350 adults. Using the context of food and the outdoors, we ask, ‘Is food simply a thing to be consumed, or could there be a greater story to participate in?’.

The impact and response has been very encouraging.

What are people saying?

Pupil – ‘‘I want to use the things we learned in my everyday life… to live differently’.
Head – ‘Closer to the Land is a beacon to help us answer the question of how do we help our young people live well’.
Parent – ‘They came back buzzing … they need to do more of this’.
Teacher – ‘Best trip we have ever been on… I’ve never seen them so restful’How can you help?

Get involved

One way we want to help more children experience this is to provide a covered space for young people to have greater access to the land. Since September 2024, we have been building an outdoor kitchen barn in the kitchen garden.

We are now nearing completion and move on to stage two; raising funds to install a kitchen and provide various equipment into the heart of the barn. This will enable groups, particularly children and young people, to grow, gather, forage, prepare, cook, eat and talk more about the food under their noses.

The total needed is £6750 and will be used for worktops, cookers and hobs, fire grills and fire pits, lighting and power, hand washing and sinks and many other things to keep the barn and the land alive.
